The importance of Lie algebras and Lie groups for applied mathematics and for physics has become increasingly evident in recent years. 
The Lie theory has become a powerful tool for studying differential equations [7], [21], [29], [35], special functions [17], [43], [48], classical and quantum mechanics, perturbation theory [33], atomic spectroscopy [38], nuclear physics [13], [32], eleraentary particle physics [18], [27], [28] and solid state physics [47]. Moreover, recent. work in pattern recognition has used the Lie theory to advantage.
